The roots of snooker originated from the game Billiards which emerged as far back as the 16th century. The modern version of the game dates back to the late 19th century. Billiards only allowed for 2 players whereas snooker allows for more players to be included.
The first professional organised snooker tournament was played in 1916 and was called the Amateur English Championships with the World Snooker Championships emerging in 1927.
From there the game grew in popularity with the first game being televised in the early 1970′s. This helped increase interest and ultimately fans for the sport. The sport is now more competitive with world rankings. Snooker is an excellent game to support, watch and play as well as to wager on.
